Charles M. Rice, Ph.D.

Charles Rice graduated from U. C. Davis (Zoology, '74) and received his Ph.D. (Biochemistry, '81) and postdoctoral training at Caltech. He moved to Washington University in St. Louis in 1986, where he was Professor of Molecular Microbiology. He has recently accepted a position at Rockefeller University. Dr. Rice's research interests center on animal RNA virus replication and pathogenesis. His laboratory studies on alphaviruses, such as Sindbis virus, have provided convenient models for understanding mechanisms regulating RNA virus replication and transcription. In addition, these small RNA viruses have been engineered and adapted to provide a set of tools for gene expression, gene therapy and vaccination. In the flavivirus family, Dr. Rice has projects involving the classical mosquito-borne agents such as yellow fever virus, the animal pestiviruses and hepatitis C virus. For hepatitis C, Dr. Rice's laboratory has studied the organization, expression, and functions of the viral proteins, discovered a novel highly conserved RNA element at the 3' end of the genome, and produced the first functional cDNA clone of this virus. Current work is aimed at optimizing cell culture assays, investigating alternative animal models, and defining new viral targets for possible therapeutic intervention. Dr. Rice is also investigating the interactions between HCV and the host immune system.
