Steven M. Feinstone, M. D. Steven Feinstone received his M.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1969. He interned at the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed his residency at Georgetown University. Between 1976 and 1989 he was staff member of the Laboratory of Hepatitis Viruses at the National Institutes of Health. In 1989 he became Chief, Laboratory of Hepatitis Viruses at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research of the FDA. His major accomplishments include the first identification of hepatitis A by immune electron microscopy; identification of Non-A, Non-B infections; the first cloning of hepatitis A virus, and first development of an infectious clone for this virus; licensing of the first hepatitis A vaccine; characterization of the cellular receptor for hepatitis A virus, and development (with C. Rice) of the first infectious clone for hepatitis C virus. Currently, Dr. Feinstone continues to be active in hepatitis C vaccine research.
