VILAB II HISTORY

Vilab was established in 1974 by The Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute of The New York Blood Center (LFKRI) at The Liberian Institute for Biomedical Research in Robertsfield, Liberia. The laboratory was established with the following goals:

1. To carry out research with chimpanzees devoted to the development of vaccines and immunotherapy for hepatitis B and C viruses.

2. To develop means for eliminating transmission of viruses by blood products.

3. To develop a vaccine against Onchocerciasis (River Blindness).

4. To humanely maintain chimpanzees used in research, with respect for their social and psychological needs.

5. To provide for the lifelong retirement of Vilab chimpanzees under wild or semi-wild conditions. The last two goals were major factors why Liberia was chosen as a site for this laboratory.

6. In 2006, despite a long history of productive research, the New York Blood Center decided to order cessation of research and closure of Vilab II.
